Bureau 1989 in lacquer is the black edition of the 1989 desk by Nouveau Standard.

The silhouette is identical to the inox sibling: four angular tapered legs, the same slender proportions, but the finish shifts the register entirely. Black lacquered metal, dark glass top: the piece reads as a single graphic object, absorbing light rather than catching it. Where the inox version plays on the contrast of industrial steel and draped satin, the lacquer is uncompromising.

Metalwork by Bylab in Angers. Made in France.

W 200 x D 80 x H 75 cm

W 78.74 x D 31.5 x H 29.53 in

Materials: Steel, polished mirror stainless steel, smoked glass, and “mineral black” tinted lacquer

About
Nouveau Standard

Nouveau Standard is a design and creative studio founded in 2024 by Simon Brandeau and Jonathan Fleurance. Extending their architectural practice within Atelier Standard, based in Nantes, the duo has developed a universe dedicated to collectible furniture and objects.

Through its collections, Nouveau Standard explores the intimate relationship we maintain with objects and the memories they carry. Drawing inspiration from the history of fashion, design, and decorative arts, the studio revisits forms, uses, and details inherited from different eras.

“We draw inspiration from iconic objects, furniture pieces, or accessories that are sometimes considered outdated, yet have profoundly shaped our collective imagination. With Nouveau Standard, we seek to transform this heritage into contemporary, durable, and distinctive pieces,” explains Simon Brandeau.

Each collection is therefore born from an exploration of memory. The challenge lies in finding a balance between the codes of a particular era — its forms, materials, and cultural references — and their reinterpretation through a resolutely contemporary language. The studio’s creations oscillate between familiarity and strangeness, evoking memories without ever slipping into nostalgic reproduction.

This approach is reflected in a careful exploration of materials and their combinations. Metal, textile, glass, and wood interact within pieces created in close collaboration with French artisans. Nouveau Standard advocates for a design approach rooted in craftsmanship, valuing production time, quality of execution, and human-scale manufacturing.

Whether in architecture, furniture, or objects, all of the studio’s projects contribute to the development of a singular visual language: one of rigorous yet sensitive design, where memory becomes material for creation. A recognizable aesthetic that is at once structured, delicate, and deeply distinctive.
