TAHANAN
Tahanan began with a quest to learn from Filipino craftsmen by founders Thea and Carlo Yu, to understand the techniques, materials, and rituals of making that have shaped our culture for generations. They sought out Filipino artisans who carried these traditions in their hands, driven by a desire to preserve their knowledge and keep these practices alive.
These early conversations and encounters formed our core belief: that tradition isn’t something to archive, but something to build upon. We begin with traditional craft, then let contemporary design refine its expression. Through this dialogue between past and present, we create pieces that feel both familiar and new, grounded in heritage yet shaped for modern living.
Tahanan lives in the in-between: where traditional craft meets contemporary design.
With our creative consultant Brian Ver, familiar silhouettes are reinterpreted under a new lens. What might register as minimal at first glance might gradually reveal its intricacies upon a closer look. The parts that make up every piece are plenty, and each one serves a distinct aesthetic or functional purpose.
Our vision is to create furniture that bridges eras, able to sit beside antique wood or brushed chrome without choosing sides. Each piece balances sculptural geometry with the human warmth of handmade work.
We carry these traditions forward, reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens, creating a language of forms that is both intentional and expressive. Materials guide our design decisions, their grain, density, and texture informing structure and proportion.
In every piece, heritage and newness coexist, giving the work its sense of permanence. Created for people who live with intention and value objects that hold meaning.
