The story

Nice gueridon table by Elizabeth Garouste & Mattia Bonetti, designed in 1987 by the iconic duo, and edited by B.G.H. Editions. The three large feet are made in solid patinated bronze, topped by an oakwood round top adorned with gilt and patinated bronze elements. This is clearly a statement piece, especially for those that believe passionate expressions of creativity go hand-in-hand with interior design. The piece is emblematic of the design duo’s commitment to avant-garde, romantic style, and is highly decorative. It has been fully restored, bronze lightly cleaned and revarnished, respecting its original patina.

Literature : Stephen Calloway, François Baudot, Gérard-Georges Lemaire, Elizabeth Garouste et Mattia Bonetti, edition Michel Avenline, Marseille, 1990, pages 192, 196, 197, 198, 200 and 201.

Garouste & Bonetti duo were celebrated for inventing a new Baroque and barbarian romanticism. They became recognised as international players in the art and design market from the early 1980s to the late 1990s. Their furniture is inventive, unconventional, subtle, constituted by heteroclite and unusual materials, in reference to the Middle Ages and Africa, revisiting the Venetian baroque and the neo-classicism. As they once stated about their work : ‘Our hope is to give people the feeling of freedom in the choice of forms. Good taste really bothers us a lot. What we care about is implanting doubt. We don’t have any rules.’

About Garouste & Bonetti

Elizabeth Garouste (born 1949) and Mattia Bonetti (born 1952) worked together in Paris from 1980-2002. Their Barbarian furniture of 1981 challenged modernist orthodoxy with rough materials and archaic forms, and in 1987 they designed the couture house of Christian Lacroix. Their pieces, shown at Galerie Néotu and later David Gill, mix bronze, wrought iron, wood, rope and colour. Collectors seek numbered editions and early one-off works.
