Relic Chrome arrives with the surface texture of something drawn from depth: a heavily pitted dark pewter stoneware, crater-like across the body, small white mineral accretions breaking through the rough glaze.
Flanking the upper body are two symmetrical clusters of spiraling ammonite coils, the most legible the Relic series produces against a dark ground. Sierra Kanistanaux developed these fossil-derived forms as the formal signature of the Relic series, coastal fragments and ancient-object forms encoded in ceramic.
Handbuilt in San Francisco. The coil definition varies with the glaze pull: no two firings read exactly the same.

About
Sierra Kanistanaux
Sierra Kanistanaux builds her ceramics entirely by hand, drawing from sources as far apart as the tidal remnants of the Northern California coast and the elemental charge of fire. Based in San Francisco, her practice unfolds across two bodies of work that hold each other in tension. The Relic series gathers coastal fragments, ancient-object forms and layered oceanic textures into vessels that carry a quiet grandeur, as if unearthed from another era rather than fired in a kiln. The Flames series reaches the opposite pole: Above The Flames and Climbing Flames approach fire as a force of transformation, their forms rising with heat and accumulated energy.
