Hand-modeled ceramic flame tongues cover the entire body of Climbing Flames, rising from base to crown in a dense, irregular mass. The surface is glazed in metallic gold-bronze, the lustrous finish deepening to dark grey where the raised forms cast shadows on one another.
Sierra Kanistanaux built this piece in San Francisco as a pure sculptural form. Fire is the subject, not the decoration. The silhouette, wider and reaching at the crown, reads as upward movement frozen mid-reach in stoneware.
Each handbuilt piece leaves the kiln with its own iridescent quality. The gold-bronze glaze responds to the light it finds.

Sierra Kanistanaux is a self-taught ceramic artist based in San Francisco. Each piece she creates tells a unique story that contributes to a larger narrative, evoking nature, mythology, ritual and eternal symbols that transcend time and culture. Through texture, pattern, and form, she aims to awaken the senses and elevate our experience of the places we inhabit. Her work draws on the places she has called home, from the architectural elements of Europe and the Mediterranean to the natural forms of Montana and Northern California. The Relic series, her most active body of work, gathers shells, coastal fragments and ancient-object forms into pieces that hold the weight of another time.
