Above the Flames is built as two worlds in one vessel: amber flame forms, hand-applied in ceramic relief, rise from the base and meet a deep midnight-black glaze upper body. At the transition, dark wing reliefs edge the rim.
Sierra Kanistanaux etched the night surface by hand in San Francisco. Birds in flight and a crescent moon, sgraffito-style, cut into the black glaze before firing. The imagery sits inside the ceramic rather than on top of it.
The visual logic is vertical and mythological: fire below, night sky above, birds crossing between the two registers. A handbuilt ceramic vessel from the Kanistanaux San Francisco practice.

Sierra Kanistanaux
Sierra Kanistanaux is a self-taught ceramic artist based in San Francisco. Each piece she creates tells a unique story that contributes to a larger narrative, evoking nature, mythology, ritual and eternal symbols that transcend time and culture. Through texture, pattern, and form, she aims to awaken the senses and elevate our experience of the places we inhabit. Her work draws on the places she has called home, from the architectural elements of Europe and the Mediterranean to the natural forms of Montana and Northern California. The Relic series, her most active body of work, gathers shells, coastal fragments and ancient-object forms into pieces that hold the weight of another time.
