The Balance Cabinet weighs 1,400 kilograms. That is the first fact worth knowing. SolidNature cut the exterior frame from Satin Verde marble, a dark striated green, and built the shelving units from Fresh Flow onyx, a lighter stone with vivid orange and grey veining. Both rest on a silver-toned metal pedestal. The cabinet rotates around a central axis. Horizontal and vertical structures interact differently depending on the angle, so the object changes as you move around it.
This is a collaboration between SolidNature, a Netherlands-based natural stone specialist active since 2011, and OMA, the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. The design strips ornament to expose the tension between two very different stones: one dense and dark, one open and striated.
The Balance Cabinet belongs to the Monumental Wonders collection, available on Monde Singulier in the Storage category. It is among the most physically demanding objects in the catalog, and among the most direct in its material logic.
