The Barboure Unit is a tall, narrow shelving piece from the Lemon Collection, executed entirely in polished stone.

Four horizontal white marble slabs span between vertical elements in lighter beige marble, the contrast between tones creating a quiet architectural rhythm. The vertical posts alternate between rounded and flat profiles, a detail that reads differently depending on the angle of approach. This variation gives the open grid structure a sculptural quality beyond its storage function.

The choice of two distinct marble varieties is deliberate: where a single stone would produce harmony, the pairing produces tension, the kind that holds attention in a room.

South African designer Kevin Frankental draws from design archives to find forms with long lives. The open grid shelving format spans centuries of furniture history. In the Lemon Collection, the Barboure Unit applies that archival thinking to stone, producing a shelving form that reads as both furniture and object.

About
Lemon Furniture

Lemon's foundation is shaped by the vision of Creative Director Kevin Frankental. With a love for design history, Kevin draws inspiration from historic design, film and art, focusing on uncovering what makes a piece truly timeless.

"There's often a tendency to romanticize the past, which I believe drives today's nostalgia", he explains. "While not everything was better before, certain classics stand the test of time and resonate across generations."

In a world increasingly marked by a sense of sameness in fashion, beauty, and design, Lemon turns away from trends. "We have no interest in looking at what's new for inspiration; doing so often results in just another version of something that already exists", Kevin reflects.

Lemon's creative process involves delving into archives: historical design, film, art, fashion, or anything that sparks inspiration. Sometimes, it's as simple as an old, beautiful photograph. From these influences, Lemon creates pieces that are a contemporary nod to the past. Each item is thoughtfully designed to be useful and needed, often inspired by objects they would love to own but cannot find elsewhere.

The result is elegantly simple pieces designed for everyday use and admiration. Each creation evokes nostalgia and romance while staying true to traditional craftsmanship, sitting naturally in contemporary spaces.

Working in collaboration with designers from Kevin's native South Africa and beyond, Lemon ensures each piece finds its own unique place. Browse the full Lemon Furniture collection on Monde Singulier.
