B | Overview:
Studio Background: Founded in 2020
Founded in 2020 by Dieter Vlieghe after graduating with a Master of Architecture at the KULeuven St. Lucas, Ghent, in 2015. Before creating his own practice, he collaborated with architecture offices such as Studio Prototype in Amsterdam and Glenn Sestig Architects in Ghent.
HADGE is a multidisciplinary practice focusing on illustrations and architectural atmospheres, exploring furniture and object design. His work seeks a perfect balance between form and content, combining a love of tactile, raw materials with craftsmanship. Currently, HADGE works on high-end residential and art-related projects, creating unique objects engaged with natural light and the patina of time.
Founders: Dieter Vlieghe
Approach, design philosophy: Trial and error
Dieter Vlieghe describes his creative process as involving trial and error. “The creative process involves trial and error. It is an unique journey where the evolution from thought to drawing and form can be transformed into the unique realization of an object, harnessing the strength of the material.” (Source: Galerie Philia)
Style: Serene, pure, and authentic ambiances
The studio intertwines brutalism and minimalism to create serene, pure, yet extremely warm and authentic ambiances.
Main inspirations: The Belgian architecture world
Many influences come from the Belgian architecture world, notably Vervoordt, Vincent Van Duysen, and Glenn Sestig, as well as Carlo Scarpa, Eduardo Chillida, and Hans van der Laan.
Contemporary inspirations include Rick Owens and Sabine Marcelis, and also “Olafur Eliasson and Vicenzo de Cotiis." (Source: Galerie Philia)
Identity and aesthetics: Purified atmosphere
The identity and aesthetics of HADGE are characterized by a purified atmosphere that brings people into an imaginary world and evokes a deeper human spectrum of emotions. His designs emphasize the tactile qualities of raw materials, producing a serene, pure, warm, and authentic ambiance. Specific objects are intimate yet open and engaged with natural light and time.
Values: Craftsmanship and authenticity
The studio values craftsmanship, authenticity, and the natural aging process of materials. Dieter Vlieghe believes "The natural process of the patinas ensures a unique finish of every piece” (Source: Galerie Philia), reflecting the passage of time and the space of the user.
Creative process: From thought to drawing to form
The studio’s creative process is based on evolution from thought to drawing to form, through trial and error, ensuring a unique realization of each object that highlights the material's strength.
Production and materials
HADGE works mainly with natural materials such as steel, wood, and stone.
Production methods
The process from 3D design to the final object for technical execution requires constant refinement and finishing. It demands a balance of technical experience and craftsmanship.
