The top reads as a structural beam: a thick, dark steel slab treated to a rich patina, its surface pressed with translucent white circles that trace the columns beneath.

At this scale, the material dialogue between dark, patinated steel and pale natural oak has room to breathe. The circular imprints spread across the surface create a rhythm that shifts with the angle of light. Nothing is incidental. Each circle marks the position of a leg below, making the structural logic of the piece visible at the surface.

The Slab collection stems from Benni Allan's investigation into the column-and-beam relationship in architecture, translated into domestic furniture. Allan (EBBA Architects, London) was named Young Architect of the Year by Building Design (UK) and received a Dezeen Awards finalist nomination with his Low Collection.

Available as part of the complete Slab family at Monde Singulier.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1029/0685/5806/files/BenniAllan_CoffeeTable_BlackSteel_L.png?v=1792964304
benni-allan-slab-coffee-table-m
Slab M Coffee Table

The Slab Coffee Table M is the most architecturally explicit piece in the collection. Three solid oak cylindrical pedestals carry a dark steel slab, its surface pressed with three circular inlays, each positioned directly above a leg below. Column to circle, column to circle, column to circle: the structural relationship that drives the Slab collection reads here as a one-to-one map.

At this medium scale, the proportion between pedestal and slab is most resolved. The three-leg configuration lets light pass beneath the slab, emphasising its apparent mass without closing off the floor plane. The oak pedestals, cut from solid planks, show a clean natural grain that grounds the darker top without competing with it.

Benni Allan's Slab collection translates architectural reasoning into domestic furniture. One solid oak cylinder. One dark, textured slab. One recessed white circular basin pressed into the surface.

The single-base format strips away structural redundancy and makes the column-and-beam logic undeniable: the oak cylinder holds the dark slab, the circle marks its crown. The concrete-effect top, subtly textured and cool to the touch, carries the weight of the concept without visual excess. The white circular basin, set against the dark field, is both formal counterpoint and practical surface.

In the Slab collection, the S format is where the architectural idea reaches its most resolved state: three elements, three relationships, nothing left to subtract. Benni Allan (EBBA Architects, London) has built a practice around this kind of economy, where fewer gestures carry deeper meaning.

Works independently as an accent table or as part of the full Slab family. A solid oak cylinder, the column in its most direct form, supports a thick dark grey square top that extends past the base on all sides. Pressed into that overhanging surface, a recessed circular basin introduces a third shape: functional, precise, and quietly unexpected.

The overhang makes the weight-over-slender relationship explicit. The square top holds its position through compression logic, not decoration. The circular basin provides a practical counterpoint: a surface for a glass, a candle, any small object that needs to stay.

Materials reinforce the geometry. The cool dark stone-effect top reads as mass; the light cylindrical wood base reads as structural precision. Benni Allan uses material opposition to make structural ideas immediately readable, a method consistent across EBBA Architects' work from buildings through to furniture.

An accent piece from EBBA's Slab collection, designed in London.
